Lab Manager

Mary Jo McCormick

Mary Jo is a third-year graduate student in the Machan Lab where she synthesizes and characterizes Manganese-based catalysts for energy relevant reactions (like the oxygen reduction reaction)

WHAT DOES YOUR POSITION ENTAIL?

As lab manager I am responsible for preparing for our events and demo shows. I also maintain the lab inventory, work with the treasurer to order supplies, and help come up with new experiments.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH LEAD?

I started volunteering with LEAD during the summer after my first year (so 2023). Last spring I was elected to lab manager.

WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED?

I love teaching, and LEAD provides a great opportunity to teach some cool science to kids. I think the outreach we do is really important since our events provide exposure to both Chemistry and the idea of going to graduate school.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE EVENT?

I really loved the Demo show that we did for Exploring Engineering and BLAST! this past summer. Demo shows are so much fun to put on because you get to watch kids start to get excited about science and learn how cool Chemistry is.

WHAT EVENTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOWARD TO?

I am so excited for Boo Bash! It is going to be so much fun doing Halloween-themed demos and experiments (and get to wear a costume)!

FUN FACT!

I love animals and have had all sorts of exotic pets like birds and lizards.
